In its 13th year, the Naledi Theatre Awards recognizes excellence in Live Theatre by presenting awards to those that have excelled in their respective fields. In recognition of their remarkable work on the production of the play, Scorched, Jade Bowers won the award for Best Director of a Play and Ilse Klink won for Best Actress in a Play. Scorched has been described by critics as an epic, impeccably directed, heartbreaking, sensitively crafted piece of theatre history with a shocking climax that will move you to tears more than once.
Jade’s critically acclaimed plays have been described as bold, innovative, brave, challenging, thought provoking and meticulously crafted. She is the winner of the 2013 Naledi award for Best Sound Design, the 2014 Arts & Culture Trust Impact Award, the 2014 Standard Bank Silver Ovation Award, the 2015 Creative Conference pitch perfect Award and the Standard Bank Ovation award. In 2016, she was given further recognition when she was awarded the highly coveted Standard Bank Young Artist for Theatre accolade.
She runs her own production company, Jade Bowers Design & Management, and she is the Arts & Culture Production Liaison at the University of Johannesburg Theatre. She has a Bachelor of Social Sciences in Drama and Sociology from the University of Cape Town and an Honours degree in Theatre Design and Directing from the University of the Witwatersrand.
Earlier this year, Ilse won the best actress award for Kristal Vlakte at the 2017 Fiesta Awards. She also won a Naledi award for performance in Big Band Blast with Harry Sideropolous, a Best Actress Avanti Award for her role in Isidingo, and she earned a Fleur du Cap nomination for her performance in Chicago.
Best known for role as Vanessa Booysens in the soapie, Isidingo, she has performed in many successful stage productions which include, Fiddler on the Roof, Maru, The Fantastics, Blomtyd is Bloeityd, Slegs vir almal, Showboat. Rent, Die Afrikaner with Gys de Villiers, and Does my Bum Wobble.In addition to Isidingo, she has appeared in Villa Rosa, Inkaba, Tussen Duiwels, Molo Fish, Hagenheim Streng Privaat, Snitch 2 and Roer Jou Voete.
Produced and Directed by Jade, Scorched, opened to sold out crowds and tells the story of twins, Janine and Simon Marwan, as they journey to the heart of their mother’s war-torn Middle-Eastern homeland in pursuit of their tangled roots and a long-lost sibling. In this land, where civil war, massacre and revenge constitute a way of life, the twins uncover shocking secrets about their mother’s history, about themselves and their origins. The lead role of the mother is played Ilse Klink.
