Teacher and Coach, Faizel Adams, Passes Away on 50th Birthday from COVID Complications

Like the Incredible Hulk, Faizel Adams towered above his peers, so it would be hard to imagine that the incredibly fit teacher and rugby coach would succumb to the COVID pandemic.

However, on Wednesday the pandemic once again showed that it does not discriminate, taking the devoted husband and father on the evening of his 50th Birthday.

Faizel had been diagnosed with the virus 25 days prior to his passing, and had been on a ventilator ever since.

Given his level of fitness, it would be expected that he would recover, but this was not to be and he leaves behind his beloved wife, Jihaan and his daughter and son.

A much loved teacher at Florida Senior Secondary in Ravensmead (Cape Town), Faizel was a man of many talents, teaching science and woodwork, as well as coaching.

He has been described by his learners as the kind of teacher that believes in you, even if you don’t believe in yourself and someone who could go above and beyond to help.

A rugby man at heart, he played for the Bellville club and the Western Province under 19 team during the 90’s and went on to become the Cravenweek Forward Coach for the Western Province.

His teammates and friends says that despite his size, he was a humble and sweet guy with an infectious smile, someone who always had something positive to share.

To the boys and young men that he coached, he became a much loved father figure that they could look up to and emulate.

At the beginning of the lockdown, he posted a video to his rugby kids so that they could stay motivated.

He said that despite the uncertainty, they should stay positive because we don’t know what tomorrow brings.

He encouraged them to stay active, advising them they don’t need a gym and should be creative by using whatever they can find in their homes to keep on staying fit and ready.

He also told the young ones to listen to their mommies and daddies and encouraged the parents to proactively help find ways to get their kids to remain active.

Finally, as always, he told them to never stop working and always stay positive.
