Wayde van Niekerk has suffered another injury setback which will see him sit out this year’s Diamond League meets.
MRI scans showed that the ligaments and meniscus in his right knee were fine, but unfortunately he picked up a bone bruise which has set him back five to six weeks
According to his management company, Wayde had been pushing himself too hard and wanted to make sure that he was competitive so that he can make a decisive comeback.
He still plans to defend his 2017 title at the World Championships which will take place in September in Doha.
“It’s very disappointing as I probably pushed myself too hard, but I’m now working towards the goal patiently,” he said in a press release.
“I will review my competition schedule with my team, and together with my coach we will decide where and when to race.”
Wayde was set to return on the 20th of July at a Diamond League meet in London.
His twitter account stated however that, not only will he not participate on the 20th, but he “won’t be participating in the upcoming Diamond League events.”
This suggests that he will only be returning in September, since the Diamond League season continues up until August.
Despite his absence, his title as a defending champion automatically qualifies him for the World Championships.
