Congratulations to Ilse Klink for being awarded best actress at the 2017 Fiesta Awards, for the play, Kristal Vlaktes. The Fiestas is an annual event where Afrikaans theatre and festival stage plays are celebrated and rewarded.
Having grown up in the Cape Flats, Ilse says that the role of Priscilla spoke to her and it was a very important production for the Cape Flats.
Kristal Vlaktes is a stage production that tells the story of Priscilla, played by Ilse, a morally ambiguous Cape Flats mother who is trying to keep her life and family together by exploiting the drug war. She travels with her ‘karretjie’ (cart), selling ‘knick-knaks’ and gets most of her ‘stock’ from drug addicts who uses the money she gives them to get high. She tries to keep her family safe from the drug war while also contributing to it. The play also explores the impact of the drug wars on the Cape Flats community and the hypocrisy of those in power.
