Congratulations to Antonio Alkana for winning gold in the men’s 110-metre hurdles at the African Athletics Championships. The athletics champion from Blue Downs says that this is preparation for the Olympics which he will be attending after he is done competing in Europe. His many athletic accomplishments include winning the gold at the All Africa Games in Brazzaville by breaking the championship record in the 110m category.
Forty years ago, his parents, Gail and Edward, were popular athletes but their dreams of becoming world champions were shattered by apartheid laws that prohibited Coloureds from competing globally.
His mother said that she raised Antonio to be independent and disciplined.
