Cape Town Opera Singer Assaulted by Army for ‘Looking like a Gangster’

In a widely distributed social media post, it was alleged the Cape Town Opera Singer, James Bhemgee, was brutally assaulted by the army.

On Tuesday afternoon, the army allegedly raided a Mitchell’s Plain house where Mr Bhemgee was staying.

It is further alleged that he was “beaten up”, strangled and suffocated with “his sweater over his face”, for “looking like a gangster” and a “drug dealer”.

The army, accompanied by the South African Police Service, also asked him about the whereabouts of drugs.

He indicated that he did not know anything about drugs, which resulted in further torture.

Reports indicated that he is being treated at the Mitchell’s Plain Day Hospital and that he will be laying charges against the army after he is discharged.

A former street sweeper, Mr Bhemgee became a household name after being crowned the winner of 2010’s SA’s Got Talent.

He has performed in sold out shows, including with international Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins and was part of Andre Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra Tour in South Africa.

In 2011, he released his debut album titled “Vincero”.
