The Department of Energy announced today that the price of petrol will increase by 9 cents at midnight.
This is the fifth consecutive fuel price increase and comes on the very day that Stats SA announced that South Africa suffered its most severe decline in GDP in ten years.
The department also announced that the price of diesel will increase by 33 cents, wholesale paraffin by 8 cents and the single maximum national retail price illuminating paraffin by 10 cents.
The department’s spokesperson Robert Maake said the main reason for the increase was the inclusion of a carbon tax levy in the price of both petrol and diesel.
This levy will add 9 cents a litre for petrol and 10 cents a litre for diesel.
It was also noted that the weaknesses of the exchange rate also contributed to the price increase.
