It has been announced that Dr Allan Boesak will be inducted into the Martin Luther King Jr Board of Preachers of Morehouse College, in Atlanta, Georgia in the USA. The induction, which is one of the most prestigious awards in the United States, will take place on the 30th of March 2017. The induction award is given to those preachers who have demonstrated that they have practiced Dr’s King’s philosophy of human rights, peace, justice, and nonviolence.
Morehouse College is one of oldest African American colleges and one of the top colleges in the US. In addition to producing several prominent US civil rights leaders like Dr. King, it has also produced leaders in medicine, technology, business and politics. Oprah Winfrey is the college’s single biggest donor and the college has conferred honorary doctorates on prominent leaders such as former US president, Barrack Obama.
Dr. King is the most famous US civil rights leader of the 1960’s and he is Nobel Laureate. As a result of his fight against racial discrimination, Dr King was assassinated in 1968.
This is not the only award received by Dr. Boesak. He was awarded the The Black Congressional Caucus Human Rights Award (USA), The Human Rights Award of the Liberty Hill Foundation (USA), The Honour Award from the Harvard University Foundation (USA), The NAACP Image Roy Wilkins Civil Rights Award (USA), The Martin Luther King Jr International Award (USA), The Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Award (USA), the Award in Recognition of Contributions to the Struggle for Equal education, Academic Freedom and Justice (USA), the Thomas Merton Award (USA), The Georg Fritze Prize (Germany), the Kaj Munk Award (Denmark), the King Hintsa Bravery Award from the Royal House of the Xhosa (South Africa), and the Andrew Murray/Desmond Tutu Medal (South Africa).
Dr. Boesak has received honorary doctorates from Morehouse, Yale University (USA), Victoria University (Canada), Warwick University (England), Brooklyn College (USA), Clark College (USA), The Interdenominational Theological Center (USA), Hope College (USA), The University of Geneva (Switzerland), and the Union Theological Seminary (USA).
Dr Boesak, has been teaching the US for the past 5 years and will be returning to South Africa in June. He is the first and only South African to have been inducted into the Martin Luther King Jr Board of Preachers.
